A Great Team Makes all the Difference
I had a bit of an epiphany while I was working on my company’s blog today. I realized just how much I’ve grown up and matured as a professional during the short time I’ve been with my present company.
A wise man once said ‘you work with good people, you win‘ and for some reason that has stuck with me even though I read it about a year ago. Maybe it’s fact that that wise man was the person who paved the foundation and provided the first bits of professional guidance for shaping my career or maybe it’s just because I’m older and wiser now.
Either way, I’d thought I ‘d break the cardinal blogging rule of not making your blog posts too personal lest you alienate your audience and share some thoughts that I can look back on in a few years.
A lot of things contributed to this epiphany. I was hopping around various blogs I frequent to get some suggestions and ideas for my company’s blog and as I read through them I started reflecting on my career. I started thinking of mistakes I’ve made in the past, how I would approach those situations differently today and how I am finally in a place (physically, mentally and professionally) that I’ve always wanted to be in.
Sounds a little wishy-washy and Charlie Brown-ish, and maybe a bit corny, but I can’t help but go back to the words ‘you work with good people, you win’ and that one statement describes the team I work with now. We get the simple things right:
- We communicate verbally.
- We meet frequently (and more importantly we know how to hold a meeting)
- We document.
- We set goals and measure against these goals.
- We host department and company retrospectives
- We respect each other.
Much like the concepts from my customer service post from a couple of days ago, these concepts seem so simple, but you’d be surprised how hard they are to execute against.
I think the most important thing I’ve learned is that I don’t have all the answers and more importantly I don’t need to have all the answers. That’s the whole point of having great leadership and a great team.
Over the coming days and weeks I plan on starting a new series on this blog to dig into these concepts and hopefully inspire others to spread more positive culture in the workplace.
